The Universal Owner
Universal Owner is the podcast for the people who allocate the world's longest-horizon capital — sovereign wealth funds, public pensions, large insurers, endowments, and multi-generational family offices.
It comes in two formats. The daily brief is a ~10-minute audio version of our morning brief: what actually moved on a universal owner's desk — sovereign allocations, pension policy, capital flows, AI and infrastructure capital, the energy transition, the Gulf, regulators, and systemic risk. The weekly long-form interview sits down with the chief investment officers, policymakers, central bankers, and the managers, data providers, and researchers shaping global capital.
One premise runs through all of it: when you own the whole market, your job is not to beat the market — it is to understand and shape its future.

The United States sold $44 billion of seven-year notes at a 4.512 percent high yield. Cover was 2.50. Primary dealers kept 12.3 percent of the competitive awards; direct and indirect accounts took 87.7 percent. What the book means for a long-horizon owner — plus the bills, the curve, the Fed balance-sheet backdrop, Workday, Mubadala–Arrive, and Diodes. Nvidia revenue rose 18% while free cash flow fell 56%. Days sales outstanding went from 45 to 60 on extended terms to certain investment-grade customers, and supply and capacity commitments more than doubled to $279bn. In Australia, Centuria Bass paused two credit funds eleven days before Bathla Group entered administration, and a second manager later capped redemptions in a vehicle it said had no Bathla exposure. Different markets, different contracts, one governance question: when can the money actually move?

Britain's National Wealth Fund agreed terms on a package of up to GBP 71 million for Tungsten West, the company restarting the Hemerdon mine in Devon: GBP 36 million of conditional equity for about 7.42 per cent of the enlarged voting capital, a proposed GBP 25 million facility at SONIA plus 5.5 percentage points rising a point a quarter, a board seat and a twelve-month veto. On the metal itself it received a limited period in which to negotiate. No offtake has been signed.
The same shape appeared twice more on Tuesday. Wilton Re, owned by CPP Investments, will establish Windsor Life Re to assume an initial US$1.7 billion block of American life liabilities, with SLC Management as lead asset manager. And CalPERS' head of sustainable investing said the fund has moved away from the term ESG while shifting capital toward grid, solar, data-centre power and geothermal.
Plus: the two-year Treasury auction cleared at 4.204 per cent with a weaker cover ratio and a markedly stronger buyer mix.

An interval fund has asked the SEC to let it hire, fire and re-price its managers without a shareholder vote — including affiliated ones. In exchange, shareholders would get the right to leave first. That trade is only as good as the exit, and last quarter the non-traded BDC market met 38% of the dollars investors asked to have back. Plus: the FCA on the £567bn SIPP market, Norway's suspended exclusion machinery, and a 50% tariff with no legal instrument behind it.

Seven funds published the width of their exit doors on Friday 21 August 2026 - one at 10%, two at 7%, four at 5% - each reserving a further 2% the board may offer and is not obliged to. Four other funds published how much cash was sitting behind those doors: 35.8%, 18.5%, 12.6% and 11.8% of net asset value.
Also in this edition: Third Point's Friday filing was its fourth registration statement since March; why a 25bp discount-rate sensitivity is not a net-asset-value effect; and the Bank of Canada staff framework for who is suited to hold private credit.

Four gaps opened between the risk a long-horizon owner holds and the systems used to see it: the SEC ends no-action responses; a $16bn reclassification at a life insurer; the Bank of Canada measures C$500bn of private credit; $3trn of AI commitments outside the leverage ratios — as the 30-year Treasury reaches its highest since 2007. NVIDIA's Form 8-K disclosed residual-value guaranties capped at $105 billion behind OpenAI's 20-year Ohio lease — on a campus whose new power is at least 9.2 GW natural gas, per a February DOE fact sheet. Plus: the SEC and DOJ step back nine days apart, CPP Investments votes against 950 directors, and PIF's audited statements show a SAR 64.7bn comprehensive loss beside a $17bn profit. On Saturday the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs attributed Friday evening's attack on an ADNOC vessel to Iran. Official releases describe four vessel involvements across three incidents in less than a week. Because no names or IMO numbers were disclosed, they do not establish four distinct hulls.
