The Universal Owner
Universal Owner is the podcast for the people who allocate the world's longest-horizon capital — sovereign wealth funds, public pensions, large insurers, endowments, and multi-generational family offices.
It comes in two formats. The daily brief is a ~10-minute audio version of our morning brief: what actually moved on a universal owner's desk — sovereign allocations, pension policy, capital flows, AI and infrastructure capital, the energy transition, the Gulf, regulators, and systemic risk. The weekly long-form interview sits down with the chief investment officers, policymakers, central bankers, and the managers, data providers, and researchers shaping global capital.
One premise runs through all of it: when you own the whole market, your job is not to beat the market — it is to understand and shape its future.

Everyone is quoting the same barrel number this morning: US crude inventories, lowest since September 2018. The number is right; the measure is wrong. Once refinery throughput is accounted for, days of cover is 23.3 - a full day thinner than the September 2018 week the level is being compared to, and the thinnest since 14 September 2018. Also this episode: the FOMC's 9-3 hold, with three votes to raise; why thin cover is not one trade across producers, refiners and midstream; and why the funding-ratio arithmetic runs the opposite way to the common shorthand - by discount regime. Korea's benchmark fell 10.84% on Tuesday. The BIS published the same day that lending to AI firms is 8% of total private credit loans. The Bank of England described a channel by which concentrated equity losses could reach sovereign debt without publishing its level. Six markets, functioning normally, each missing the one measurement an owner would need.

Three of the largest capital structures disclosed anywhere in seventy-two hours were not purchases. Nvidia is reportedly discussing a backstop of roughly $250bn so OpenAI can lease a 10GW Ohio campus. Kuwait signed a $16bn lease-and-leaseback of its crude pipelines. Saudi Arabia PIF signed memoranda worth up to $24.5bn. Meanwhile marine insurance has not withdrawn from the Strait of Hormuz - Lloyds and Chubb opened new capacity on 19 June, and the Lloyds Market Association says safety concerns rather than availability are driving ships away. Cover simply costs $10m to $14m a voyage now. The guarantee was not withdrawn. It was repriced to a level at which almost nobody exercises it.

Today's contradiction: the largest owners are buying more private credit than ever — while the only door out is starting to price at a discount. Andy Burnham's gilt shock reprices rates higher; Townsend raises $2bn to buy secondaries at a discount to NAV; yet CalSTRS commits $2bn with Nuveen and Mubadala opens its $25bn credit book. Owners are becoming the supply side of illiquid credit at a rate-repricing turn.Today's live scenario: https://www.universalassetowners.com/scenario-lab/?s=DS-20260722-private-credit-liquidity-crunchEditorial analysis only. Four ships crossed Hormuz on Monday. The ship-to-ship workaround is slowing, and the Houthis have declared a blockade of Saudi Arabia's Red Sea bypass - war-risk cover doubled in a day. Plus: Japan's Y370tn blueprint meets the bond market, Korea's rented rebound ahead of the megacap earnings test, and a dense real-assets deal tape led by CPP Investments and Brookfield. Only four vessels crossed the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, and no LNG tanker has been visible since Thursday. Today: the transition's bridge fuel stuck at its narrowest point; China's ~60bn-yuan policy put against a 10tn-yuan drop; TSMC's $265bn Arizona bet; the sovereign transition trade (Taiwan BLF, MAS, World Gold Council); and a stagflationary Asia (ADB). This week’s Big Read from The Long Horizon Weekly (Issue No. 07, 19 July 2026). Three of the world’s largest allocators — Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala, Canada’s CPP Investments and the California State Teachers’ Retirement System, more than US$1.3 trillion between them — go on the record: the counter-cyclical case, the benchmark debate, and deliberately light U.S. positioning.Read the exclusive: universalassetowners.com/on-the-record/Read the magazine: The Long Horizon · Weekly, Issue 07
